As many organizations have begun to slash jobs many professionals are wondering about the fate of instructor-led training. Though many departments are going to become leaner in the near future, we feel that training will still be part of the cost of doing business. High attrition rates and career changing create a need for on-the-job training. However, along with the need for training there comes a need to keep the costs down. E-learning has increasingly become a popular option for small and mid-sized organizations who don’t want to spend thousands of dollars training a handful of employees. E-learning provides the most cost-effective strategy and with the ease of SilkWeb’s turn-key training solutions businesses organizations find it easier to outsource their training. There will always be some topics better served by a live or virtual instructor but e-learning is becoming an indispensible acpect of the new leaner training departments. After all if a poor economy teaches us anything it is where we can cut back on spending.

Dr. Michael Shaw, President of SilkWeb Consulting & Development is currently working on a new chapter for a book being published by the IGI Global. The new chapter will include among other topics the use of social media in e-learning. As web-based learning continues to gain in popularity organizations are constantly in search of new technologies to enhance the learner’s experience. Institutions face stiff competition as the number of online schools has grown over the last 5 years. It seems that a new online university6 crops up almost daily! Online learning has always required motivation and personal or professional interest in the subject matter on the part of the learner. However web based training offers several advantages over other types of learning if the first obstacle can be overcome. These include the ability to schedule live chat sessions with instructors, extablishing class discussion forums where learners can engage in discussion with their peers, integration of group learning activities, and streaming video downloads that allow learners to view live or recorded video materials from the comfort of their home or office. New media has a place in e-learning just as it does in the business world. Staying connected and receiving information on demand when a learner needs it - NOW - is why social media popularity will continue to grow in the e-learning community. Colleges and universities that are forward thinking in terms of classroom technologies will find creative ways to integrate it into the existing curriculum. Other schools who are too slow to jump on the social media bus will be relegated to the sidelines and eventually become a piece of the past as they are eaten up by the new e-learning giants.
Since around 1997 the University of Phoenix saw tremendous growth in the online education sector. In the past 3 years that growth has slowed down mostly in part to the competition that has sprung up and the change in traditional brick-and-mortar institutions who now offer online programs. From a consultant’s perspective the mistake made by University of Phoenix was that they rested too long on their laurels and didn’t stay on top of the emerginig technologies. As they sat back and pondered how to spend their fat paychecks they thought of ways to create more money but forgot about why it is important to continue to add value to the classroom experience for their customers/learners. In simple speak: they fell behind the times. They didn’t listen to their critics and they didn’t embrace change - all because they thought they were at the forefront of it. Well we all know what happens when we get a little too confident - we have a tendency of getting knocked down. Now we have some other large players in the game like Walden, Capella, and Argosy. It will be interesting to see who emerges victorious in the war of e-learning.
For more information on how you can implement e-learning solutions for your school or business please contact us for a consultation. We offer consultations for $100-120 per hour. Please contact Dr. Michael Shaw or Laurel Silk, M.Ed.

SilkWeb Consulting & Development is honored to have been invited to participate in the Adobe Captivate 4 prerelease program. We are excited at the opportunity to provide feedback on a product to which we are so reliant upon for the development of our materials. We are long time users of Adobe products and I can remember my first Adobe products- PhotoShop and Dreamweaver. Those two products were used to create the first SilkWeb site over 10 years ago! Adobe has done so much for the design/creative industry and we are taking this endeavor very seriously. We plan on setting aside a good amount of time reviewing the product and providing feedback to help move the development process forward. Thanks Adobe! SilkWeb Consulting & Development is proud to announce that we have added the Leadership Practices Inventory Workshop to our list of instructor-led trainings. This is a 4-hour instructor led training Workshop that includes a comprehensive 360 degree feedback tool that is completed online during the pre-learning of the course.
In this informative course you will take part in a 360 Leadership Assessment tool designed to identify your strengths and weaknesses as a leader and to help you choose actions that you want to take to improve your capacity as a leader. The LPI is a questionnaire with thirty behavioral statements—six for each of The Five Practices—that takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. Leaders complete the LPI-Self, rating themselves on the frequency with which they think they engage in each of the thirty behaviors. Five to ten other people—typically selected by the leaders—complete the LPI-Observer questionnaire, rating the leaders on the frequency with which they think they engage in each behavior. Respondents can indicate their relationship to the leader—manager, co-worker or peer, direct report, or other observer—but all the observers’ feedback is anonymous.
The 360 assessment is completed prior to the face-to-face workshop. In the workshop you will learn how to analyze the feedback and develop a short-term action plan for improvement. In addition you will examine the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership aimed at helping you integrate the best leadership practices into your life!
The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership are:
1. Model the Way
2. Inspire a Shared Vision
3. Challenge the Process
4. Enable Others to Act
5. Encourage the Heart
Email us to receive a complete list of instructor-led training courses that can be delivered at your location.
